Hi Aoife!Between Aoife Cassidy and You

Hi Mark! I saw you posted about this, and I've been thinking about it. I started to write something, then got discouraged. But here goes again...
Lots of family members and friends' families, who are from the next generation and upwards, use the word Queer to describe a homosexual. I do remember over the years cringing when I heard the word being used, particularly by them, as I always saw myself as someone who favoured, and often rallied for equality, and I felt that this was an old-fashioned, archaic term, and it's use displayed ignorance, intolerance, and a lack of progressiveness. I found/find it a bit embarrassing.
However, most people I know are not homophobic, therefore I feel those that do use this term use it as it is what they are accustomed to using to describe somebody who is gay, without thinking of the implications.
I do not use the word myself, preferring to use homosexual and gay. However, as the word queer, to my knowledge, is usually deemed politically incorrect, what about the word gay? Surely this could be on the list in the future for being scrapped, perhaps not for another 40 years, but I predict it will be.
Words become loaded, usually because thay have been misused. I think a homosexual has more ownership of the use of the word queer than a straight person, as I have ownership of calling myself a Mick or a Paddy.
I hope this was helpful! You rock Mark, and best of luck with this, let me know how it works out for you, I'll be interested to see the results! xoxoxo
